Specialised wheelchair controls are those other than a ‘standard’ joystick and can include non-standard controls which may be for both driving and integration with other devices. Examples of specialised controls include:

• Switch controls
• Integrated controls
• Custom mounted controls e.g. chin mounted
• Alternatives to joysticks e.g. head control

Specialised controls can provide independent mobility for those with extremely limited movement or difficulty with fine control.

Specialised Controls and the Barnsley AT Team

The AT team is able to provide integrated systems as part of an EC or Communication Aid system if appropriate.  Provision of special controls however is the remit of local wheelchair services.
