Gemma is an Assistive Technology Specialist Speech and Language Therapist with the team. Gemma’s role is to work with individuals using our service to assess and provide appropriate electronic assistive technology.
Gemma graduated from Newcastle University with an MSc in Language Pathology and has previously worked as an Assistant Neuropsychologist and as a Speech and Language Therapist in an Adult Therapy Team in North Lincolnshire. Gemma joined the Barnsley Assistive Technology team in March 2016. Gemma says:
My previous experience is in neurorehabilitation, predominantly supporting people following acquired neurological conditions such as a stroke or brain injury. I have always had an interest in AAC, which played a key part in my previous work but my interest of and experience with electronic assistive technology solutions has vastly developed since starting my role in Barnsley. I am particularly interested in language organisation and the representation of language in AAC methods, including for multilingual users. I enjoy exploring and developing resources and implementation strategies to support the use of AAC.
