Supporting Communication for those in ICU
This project was a collaboration with Imperial College/RCA Helix Centre, Digital Stitch Ltd and Devices for Dignity.
We developed and evaluated a communication aid specifically designed for use in Intensive Care with patients who are temporarily unable to speak because of a tracheotomy.
The app was designed following qualitative research with those who had direct experience of this situation in ICU; design-ethnography with an embedded designer in ICU and finally incorporating evidence from a systematic literature review (unpublished) of others’ work into AAC and ICU.
The app was evaluated in a service evaluation at Barnsley Hospital and has now been released onto the Apple app store.
