Means, Reasons and Opportunities for AAC and AT (V2) is an updated version of this popular AAC resource.

The original Means Reasons and Opportunities Resource was developed following a research project which looked at communication aid users’ views of communication aids and their priorities. The updated version includes extra vocabulary and has also been made available in a range of formats.

The resource is designed for use with individuals who require alternative ways of communicating to natural speech. The purpose of the resource is to help communication partners structure a conversation to find out more about the user’s means, reasons and opportunities for communication.

For more information about how to use the resource and examples about how it may be used please see the guidance document.

The resource is available to download in the following formats. All formats are customisable depending on the needs of the user. For example, the symbol set, size of cells, colours, font or words can be changed accordingly.

  • Gridset on Grid 3– using Widgit symbols
Grid 3 or Mind Express software is required to be able to download this as a Gridset. If you do not already have access to this software, access to a free trial is available via the company websites.  You can use this software to print the resources for use.
  • Online Global Symbols Board – a combination of global symbols, open symbols and screenshots/photos.
A free global symbols account is required to log in and access the boards, log in and then click the link above
  • A Zip file of PDFs of the global symbol boards
These PDFs were made using the Global Symbol Board Maker using a combination of global symbols, open symbols and screenshots/photos.  We are unfortunately unable to publish the Widgit symbol version due to licencing restrictions.
